Windows 10: The Final Countdown

Resist the urge to hum the one-hit wonder popularized by the film Rocky IV.  Microsoft will officially end support for the Windows 10 Operating System (OS) in less than a month. Back in 2021, when Microsoft first announced the October 15, 2025 cutoff, most of the world was focused on pandemic recovery, remote work setups, and vaccine debates—not operating system upgrades. Migrating from Windows 10 to Windows 11 took a backseat to “Pfizer” vs. “Moderna.” 2025 felt far away. But here we are, and the deadline is real.  Is your business ready for Windows 10 end of support 2025?

What’s at Stake

Microsoft is adhering to the October 15, 2025  deadline, despite the huge number of Windows devices that cannot migrate to the new version because of hardware compatibility issues.  This could be as many as 400 million devices worldwide. Even organizations with compatible hardware face steep costs.  Nexthink’s VP Tim Flower estimates that there are 181 million devices that are eligible for Extended Security Updates (ESU).  They  will pay $61 per device, per year—a total bill projected in the billions.

This is not just an upgrade for enhanced features and operational efficiency.  Without support, Windows 10 will no longer receive critical security patches. Cybercriminals target outdated Operating Systems because they are easier to exploit.  Windows 11 mitigates the risk with advanced malware protection and enhanced encryption protocols to protect against evolving cyberthreats.

What You Should Do Now

If you haven’t started preparing, don’t panic—but don’t delay. Microsoft’s migration plan outlines a clear path to help get ready for Windows 10 end of support:

  • Run compatibility checks for hardware and software.
  • Categorize devices: upgrade in place, replace, or extend support.
  • Validate business apps to ensure they run smoothly on Windows 11.
  • Develop a deployment plan to minimize downtime and disruption.
