World Environment Day – #BeatPlasticPollution

World Environment Day Beat Plastic Pollution

World Environment Day Is

Just Around the Corner!

This year’s theme: #BeatPlasticPollution.

World Environment Day, with its theme #BeatPlasticPollution, is a global call to action for environmental awareness and advocacy.  The United Nations General Assembly designated June 5th as World Environment Day in  1972.  Celebrated in over 100 countries, it is the world’s largest platform for environmental public outreach.

The E-Waste Challenge

E-waste is the fastest growing segment of the global waste stream, driven by increasing demand for electronic devices, short product lifespans, and limited repair options.  While metals in electronics can pose environmental risks, they are naturally occurring and biodegradable over time. However, plastic is not. It can persist in the environment for hundreds—or even thousands—of years. Moreover, plastic pollution is everywhere—from the peak of Mt. Everest to the depths of the Mariana Trench.  Alarmingly, it is also in human breast milk and brain tissue. A typical desktop computer is contains 30–40% plastic, often infused with flame retardants and anti-corrosive chemicals. In addition, when incinerated or improperly disposed of, these plastics release toxic pollutants into the air and soil.
