If Employees are Working from Home, What’s Happening with Your Tech?

If Employees are Working from Home, What’s Happening with Your Tech?

Whether your return-to-office (RTO) policy is remote or hybrid, you need to evaluate your office technology needs. Two years ago employers were reimagining the traditional workspace. Additional space was needed for social distancing and worker demands for flexibility and convenience.  Property managers, office administrators and employees agreed that the workplace of the future would be some type of hybrid combination of work from home (WFH), work from anywhere (WFA) and in-office.  Most of the focus was on the design of physical space:  accommodating social distancing while providing space for collaboration when teams do meet in the office and corresponding technology to facilitate collaboration when working remotely.   Covid officially “ended” last month and the battle over remote and hybrid work is heating up.

Even if “new,” your technology may be halfway through its useful life!

Unless you did a technology refresh just before the pandemic, it’s likely your technology is halfway through its useful life.  Microsoft says the average age of refreshing a desktop is 4.4 years while laptops have a slightly shorter lifespan.  After this time, they begin to slow down which affects employee productivity.  If they are not updated or no longer supported, they are vulnerable to security attacks and viruses.

Studies have shown that downtime costs were minimal in the three to five year time frame. But, they shot up dramatically after three years.  In addition, organizations and their teams are increasingly mobile and are no longer in a controlled environment.  WFA means devices can be used at the sandy beach, while the kids splash in the pool or forgotten on a picnic table during a sudden summer shower.  This impacts the condition and performance of your devices.

Taking up Storage Space

Even before the pandemic, research showed that businesses and organizations were sitting on years’ worth of obsolete electronics. They simply don’t know what to do with them. They’re worried about the data they contain. Conversely, they are unaware of the risks of retaining them.  They’re taking up space, are at the risk of theft of the data or the actual device itself, and are decreasing in value.

Electronics Value Recovery Can Help Evaluate Your Technology

Working with your in-house IT team, or independently, EVR’s knowledgeable technicians can help you evaluate your equipment to determine what can be retained and what is obsolete.  We can assist in the dismantling or simply pickup what you’ve already collected, from within your space or at the loading area.

How We Work

At our secure, gated and camera-monitored facility, each device that potentially contains data is individually checked in and sent to testing for possible reuse or recycling. Devices with data are then securely wiped for reuse or shredded for scrap recycling.   Refurbished devices and re-useable parts, including cords, adapters, mice and keyboards, etc. are sent to certified partners for recycling.
